HIV Persistence, Reservoirs, and Eradication Workshop Preliminary Program Available
An informative HIV eradication workshop is scheduled for the end of the year and its preliminary program is now available, featuring the work of some of the world's top HIV researchers and scientists. The "5th International Workshop on HIV Persistence, Reservoirs, and Eradication Strategies" will be held in Sin Maarten, West Indies, on December 6-9, 2011. Since 2003, this biennal reference workshop attracts over 150 scientists from all over the globe to further progress on this issue.

Despite Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), HIV is a life-long condition because it lies dormant in some cells, and this cannot be changed by the drugs that exist currently. Therefore, life-long ART is necessary, but the problems with compliance, drug resistance, and cost prove to be huge barriers to making this feasible. Also, HIV-infected individuals in developed countries do not have the financial resources necessary to access ART on a short term basis, let alone a long-term one.

The Steering and Scientific Committees of the workshop have just recently opened the preliminary program of this meeting, and it is now available online. The meeting will be a mixture of lectures and abstracts by the workshop's participants. These participants come from a wide array of fields and backgrounds, including basic scientists, clinical scientists, and pharmaceutical companies that have dedicated time and resources to one particular goal, and that is to find a cure for HIV infection. Important advances have been made already, including developing a "functional cure" for some patients that involves controlling HIV replication without ART; however, the virus is still not completely eliminated from the body using this method.

Recognized and renowned researchers take part in this preliminary program, and it consists of several parts: the models of HIV persistence, the origin of the residual virus, the immunological factors that might be at play, the biological tools designed to measure the HIV reservoir, and the clinical trials either already underway or in the planning stages designed for HIV control without ART.

"We are so excited to have the best experts in the field and brought people both from the academic and the private sectors," said Dr Alain Lafeuillade, Chairman of the meeting.

The organizers are specialists from both the United States and Europe and are supported by the French Agency for AIDS Research (ANRS). In the coming months, the organizers will supplement and enhance the program with selected abstracts. Researchers, funding agencies, and patients representatives are encouraged to take part in this top-notch meeting.
