Toulon, France (OPENPRESS) February 19, 2011 -- The ‘International Workshop on HIV Persistence’ has been a major source for those seeking information and guidance in a global effort to understand and eradicate HIV from its reservoirs. Ever since its first edition in 2003, it has been recognized for its original ideas, vision and innovative qualities. Its organizers will meet in Boston at the end of this month in parallel of the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) to define the scientific program of its next edition this December in Saint Martin.

The main focus of these workshops has been to understand and find out ways to tackle HIV reservoirs and finally eradicate HIV. Since its inception, this workshop has grown tremendously in terms of stature. It has taken rapid strides forward with all the participants being ever committed to finding a cure for HIV.

The participants at the ‘International Workshop on HIV Persistence’ include scientists, researchers and doctors who have achieved significant breakthroughs in HIV research during the past 15 years. The topics are designed to help understand the reasons for HIV persistence in its reservoir and also find out new and innovative strategies to help eradicate HIV from the infected hosts.

This workshop provides a platform for the leading scientists to interact and network with one another. It enables them to share information in order to gain a better understanding of the various mechanisms that allow for the maintenance of HIV reservoirs. The presentations at the workshop cover the very latest developments in the field of HIV persistence and reservoirs.

This workshop is held once every two years. More than 200 leading scientists are invited to be a part of it. This brings out the latest research developments out in the open so that the people at large know the advancements made in the battle against HIV.

The International Workshop on HIV Persistence is supported by ANRS, the French Agency for AIDS Research, Abbot Virology, Boehringer Ingelheim, Gilead, Janssen – Cilag, Bentham Science and ViiV Healthcare.

The 5th International Workshop on HIV Persistence is to be held at Radisson St. Martin Hotel, St. Martin, West Indies from December 6th to 9th December 2011.

HIV Reservoirs Cure Initiative Will Meet in Boston This Month
Date: 21 February 2011

The prospect of controlling HIV persistence in infected persons without permanent antiretroviral therapy is the hard task a group of researchers has addressed since 2003. This group, led by Dr. Alain Lafeuillade, MD, PhD - a French doctor and researcher working on HIV Reservoirs, will meet in Boston at the end of February, taking advantage of the opportunity provided by the 18th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections.

TOULON, FRANCE, February 21, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Can HIV infection ever be cured? The prospect of efficiently controlling HIV persistence in infected persons without permanent antiretroviral therapy is the hard task a group of researchers has addressed since 2003.

Dr. Alain Lafeuillade, MD, PhD (a French doctor and researcher working on HIV Reservoirs), along with other international researchers, organizes every two years the International Workshop on HIV Persistence, Reservoirs & Eradication Strategies. The next workshop will be held in December 2011.

During their meetings, they bring together basic scientists and clinical researchers to speed up the search for a HIV cure. Last October they also launched a web portal dedicated to the community of researchers working on HIV reservoirs, which has become an active link between scientists, making connections all around the world.

Current antiretroviral therapy does not eradicate HIV in the body, is life-long, includes some toxicities, and is not affordable for a lot of patients around the world. HIV remains hidden in some cells (the HIV reservoirs), located in different anatomic compartments. Understanding the mechanisms of HIV latency requires molecular biologists, virologists, and immunologists to work together.

"With this multi-disciplinary working group, I am confident that we will bring HIV-infected patients better therapeutic strategies in the near future," said Doctor Alain Lafeuillade, Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases in France and coordinator of these initiatives. "Our main tactic is to promote innovative ideas off the beaten path," he added.

The group will meet in Boston at the end of February, taking advantage of the unique opportunity provided by the 18th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) that will gather 4,000 HIV specialists between Feb 27 and Mar 3, 2011.
