Enzyme Helps HIV Infect T Cells
A researcher at Georgetown University who previously discovered a protein that cuts the outer layer of T cells to promote HIV infection has discovered an enzyme that does the same thing but in a different way. The enzyme, LIM domain kinase (LIMK) moves like a propeller and is required by the virus to infect T cells. Experiments in which LIMK was activated by a compound led to an increase in the infection of T cells so they hypothesize that decreasing its activity will. T cells that were created in the lab to inhibit LIMK activity were not infected with HIV as easily as cells from a donor. It is hoped that LIMK inhibitors can be developed and believe that drug resistance would not be a major issue in targeting this enzyme.
