Software antivirus utilizzato nella ricerca del vaccino HIV

Non più solo per bloccare gli annunci di Viagra ed e-mail truffa, i ricercatori stanno ora utilizzando software antivirus con filtri anti-spam a caccia di un vaccino contro l'HIV.

DURBAN, Sud Africa - Il software antivirus sta aiutando i ricercatori nella caccia di un vaccino contro l'HIV, un uso sorprendente per un nuovo sistema di filtraggio utilizzato per bloccare truffe lotterie e-mail e spam su farmaci per la disfunzione erettile.

I ricercatori di Boston e KwaZulu-Natal, in Sud Africa, insieme con la divisione di ricerca della Microsoft, stanno utilizzando un software antivirus con anti-spam per cercare come muta il virus che causa l'AIDS, che, come spam e-mail è in costante mutamento e adattamento per bypassare i vari blocchi.

David Heckerman, che ha sviluppato il software di biologia computazionale chiamato PhyloD, ha detto al Los Angeles Times che lui e il suo team sono alla ricerca del "'tallone d'Achille" del virus che causa l'AIDS:

"I filtri anti-spam cercano di bloccare lo spam e gli spammer cambiano e mutano ... E nel caso dell'HIV, abbiamo il sistema immunitario che lotta contro il virus dell'HIV, che muta per cercare di passare."

La Microsoft sta collaborando infatti con i ricercatori della University of KwaZulu-Natal per il Programma di Ricerca Aids in Sud Africa, con Istituto di Ricerca per la tubercolosi e l'HIV del KwaZulu-Natal , e presso l'Istituto Ragon del Massachusetts General Hospital, del MIT e di Harvard.

No longer just for blocking Viagra ads and scam emails, researchers are now using spam-filtering antivirus software in the hunt for an HIV vaccine.

DURBAN, South Africa — Antivirus software is helping researchers in the hunt for an HIV vaccine, a surprising new use for a filtering system otherwise used to block email lottery scams and spam about erectile dysfunction drugs.

Researchers from Boston and KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, along with Microsoft's research division, are using a spam-fighting antivirus software to search for the virus that causes AIDS, which like email spam is constantly mutating and adapting to bypass blocks, Johannesburg's Sunday Times reported.

David Heckerman, who developed the computational biology software called PhyloD, told the Los Angeles Times that he and his team are searching for the "Achilles' heel" of the virus that causes AIDS:

"We have an adversarial situation going on between spam filters trying to block the spam and the spammers changing and mutating ... And in the case of HIV, we have the immune system fighting the virus and HIV mutating to try to get through."

Microsoft is working with researchers at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Center for the Aids Program of Research in South Africa and the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV, and at the Ragon Institute of the Massachusetts General Hospital, MIT and Harvard.
